Blitzkrieg across western europe.
The calm in Western Europe was shattered in April 1940, when the blitzkrieg hit Denmark and Norway. Canadian troops were immediately ordered to Scotland to board a ship for Norway. The next day, however, the order was changed when British troops took their place. The Canadians were spared the sting and overwhelming defeat. By May, Norway and Denmark had fallen to Nazis, and by May 20th, the German Wehrmacht had punched through France as far as Amiens. The following day, the panders reached the English Channel. Retreating British forces were trapped in the French coastal town Dunkirk Hitler ordered the Wehrmacht to pull back and give Luftwaffe the honor of striking the final blow. Fortunately, a dense fog pinned the German aircraft to the ground and gave British forces time for an escape plan. The delay would prove to be Hitler's first major mistake. In the meantime, however, the new British prime minister, Winston Churchill, warned the British House of Commons to prepare for disaster!
